Yes we CAN make a Difference, especially on the food front.
Think about it: if we are fortunate, most of us eat three times a day. That’s over 1,000 meals a year! Say you live with three other people – that’s over 4,000 meals in one household alone. But many individuals and families are not even getting one meal a day, and the situation is expected to worsen in the coming weeks and months.
Canned Food Drive
Starting in the first week in January 2021, and running continuously thereafter until no longer needed. We will be Challenging Our Communities to Help Us Can Hunger through the ONE CAN Make a Difference Food Drive.
We are challenging individuals in all 16 Council areas to join the ONE CAN campaign, and compete with each other weekly.
Each week a winning council area will be declared the winner based on the highest number of cans that each council team managed to collect. (And yes, there will be a prize for each winning team)
1 Week = 1 Winner = Lots of People Fed
The Food Drive will benefit Empowerment Gateway’s “Food for Thought” program.
The Fun Part?
Do something fun, like a fancy dress, wear a fancy hat, fancy glasses (or even a funny mask) and go and stand at a supermarket car park for example with a food trolley, or other places that you know. Get on the phone to your friends, promote the campaign on your Facebook, Twitter or other social media pages and groups. The target is to collect as many cans as you can in your local area.
The Feel-Good Part?
By donating what Canned Goods you can, you know that you are helping people right in our communities who are experiencing food insecurity due in part to the adverse economic effects of Covid-19.
This is one opportunity for you to get out doing something good for the Algarve communities and help feed many mouths. Ask all your friends that when they shop, for them to buy an extra can or two of non-perishable food for someone in need and drop it at our drop off points. (If you want to donate other food, toiletries, cleaning materials or pet food we will gladly accept them too)
List of drop off points in Algarve council areas will be posted here shortly.
- Vila do Bispo:
- São Brás de Alportel:
- Castro Marim
- Vila Real de Santo António:
Main drop off point is in Lagos
Because of all the Covid restrictions you can't participate at the moment? We have an alternative option for you.
Take Part in a Virtual Food Drive Instead
What’s a virtual food drive? Our most efficient, impactful food drive to get your friends, coworkers and family engaged to help fight hunger. Instead of going to the grocery store and buying canned food, especially during this uncertain time, we will help you create a link to encourage people to donate to the Food for Thought program so that we can purchase food for our neighbours in need.
- To start a Virtual Food Drive, fill out this form and click send.
- When we receive your information, we will contact you soon to complete your Virtual Food Drive request.
- Once we’ve created your link, we encourage you to share it via social media and/or email.
Your online cash donations will be utilized to support the greatest needs of the “Food For Thought…” program, including our distribution of emergency food parcels, pre-packed emergency grocery bags for the families served by our organisation who are eligible for free food support.
All donations stay locally in the Algarve, and are supporting families served by our organisation and collaboration partners across the region
We are looking for:
- Venues across the Algarve that can be used as drop-off points
- Volunteers to collect and distribute food parcels across the Algarve
If you would like to join our program as a collaborating partner, Contact Us Now!
